Tissue Culture Laboratory

Founded to supply the seed potato requirement of frozen finger potato and starch production facilities, which belong to Konya Seker, tissue culture was put into operation in 2013. It has a total of 10.000 m2 climate controlled glass greenhouses, 3000m2 and 7000m2 each, tissue culture laboratory and cold air storage for small tubers.

In vitro potato plants, obtained with meristem culture from potato shoots are transferred to climate controlled greenhouses after reproducing with not culture in completely sterile environment in tissue culture laboratories. Potato mini tubers, obtained after an approximately 4 month growing period, are harvested. Obtained mini tubers are at super elite stage, zero seed, whose generation ages are zero and are given to farmers as foundation stock after being reproduced in the field for 2 years by Konya Seker.

Objective of foundation of tissue culture by Konya Seker is to eliminate foreign dependency for potato seeds and to increase efficiency and quality by producing young and clean seeds, which are free from diseases.

Capacity of the tissue culture laboratory is 1.000.000 in vitro plants per year and production capacity of the tissue culture greenhouses is 3.000.000 mini tubers per year.

Tissue culture laboratories have infrastructure to make production 365 days per year with the existing greenhouses. Heating system provides added value to the company by both utilizing waste factory energy and turning waste energy into production in winter months. Production continues using the cooling system in summer season.

In addition, improvement works to obtain domestic potato kind also continues.
